How this is built

Every night the readout is built from public reports and company filings, checked, reviewed by a person, then sent for approval before anything is published.

Stages

Each headline is placed on a ladder, from least to most concrete:

• INTENT: announced or discussed; land, clearances or funding still open
• APPROVED: a board or authority has approved; not yet started
• CONTRACTED: a contract with a named counterparty is signed
• GROUND BROKEN: a foundation stone or site start is reported
• BUILT: commissioned or running (including trial runs)

Evidence badges

Come from our own daily ledger, which tries to match each media report to a company's exchange filing:

• FILING MATCHED the company's own exchange filing states this, and is listed as a source
• NO FILING MATCH the company files with the exchanges, but we found no filing that states this (that does not mean none exists)
• MEDIA ONLY media reports only; there is no company filing to match

A match is a lead, not proof of identity or scope.

What is checked, and how

• A fact is kept only if it has a quote that is really in the article it came from.
• Every number and name in a written line must occur in that article.
• Amounts are read from the quoted sentence itself.
• Where the company has filed with the stock exchanges, the filing is read and checked against the same figures.
• We look for other, independent outlets reporting the same event, and say how many agree on the amount.
• "Why it matters" and "who can act" are our own reading, always labelled as such, and checked only for numbers, names, and that they contain no advice or price talk.
• Where reports disagree, we say so, or leave the detail out rather than guess.

Limits, honestly

• Most events are still checked against a small number of articles, not the whole press.
• Company sector labels are not always reliable.
• English only, for now.
• Nothing here is investment advice, and nothing is published without a person reviewing it first.
